Massachusetts’ first-ever KidWind Challenge will be held at Greenfield’s new Science and Sustainability Expo on Saturday, May 5, from 9am-1pm at Greenfield Community College’s Dining Commons. The Greening Greenfield Energy Committee (GGEC), organizer of the event, would like to invite everyone to come by for twenty to thirty minutes and join with them to foster the work of youth and educators in building knowledge and values for a clean, green, sustainable lifestyle.

Over twelve teams from four schools will compete in the KidWind Challenge. Fourth to twelfth grade students have designed and built model wind turbines. At the Expo they will vie for awards based on the energy output of their turbine as measured in a wind tunnel, and for design quality, which will be judged by wind energy professionals.

The Expo will also have over a dozen exhibits displaying a wide-range of non-competitive projects and resources. Ten exhibits will be about climate change. Others could showcase projects related to ecological and environmental studies, recycling and composting efforts, or energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. There may even be a few model homes and landscapes built for the Green “Dollhouse” Challenge, a new non-competitive project open to teams of all ages, that has been created by EnergyTeachers.org.

“We are really excited about this new opportunity for local educators, youth and parents to share and inspire one another with wind turbines and other great science and sustainability-related projects that are taking place inside and outside of the classroom,” said Susan Reyes, science educator, and project coordinator for the event. “We are looking forward to being inspired by all the entries, and eager to celebrate their accomplishments.  We hope that this is the beginning of a really exciting annual event that offers young people and community members a way to discuss and explore how we can live more sustainably, and to help us all visualize what our future might look like.”

Schools registered to date include the Amherst (MA) Regional High School; Four Rivers Charter School in Greenfield, MA: Hadley (MA) High School; Holyoke (MA) Catholic High School; and Mohawk Trail Regional High School (Buckland, MA).
